There are more than a few articles “out there” about the infamous Smart Home and how the “Internet of Things” is helping to connect many common household gadgets and appliances. While all these new gadgets and gizmos are exciting and interesting, if you don’t know what they are, what benefit they offer or why you should be interested in them, what good are they?

Even worse, do you know what features these smart home gadgets have? Here you can learn about some of the most unique features that can make your life easier, many of which you may have never heard of.

Convenience

Now you can take something as simple as a probe thermometer and make it work for you. All you have to do is connect it to a smart device and you can get back to the fun, rather than having to stand over your grill. This level of convenience is offered with countless smart devices used today, including automatic lights, entertainment systems and even curtains that can be raised and lowered with the touch of a button.

Use of the “Magic Words”

No longer do you have to keep track of countless remotes when you can use a wall mounted keypad or touchscreen that can be programmed to control everything. There are even options to use a mobile app on your phone to control your entire home.

With unique smart home features, such as Google Home, for example, you have an in-house personal assistant that is available to “help” you on demand – as long as you know the magic words. With the right voice commands, you can turn on and off lights, play music, open or close the garage door and even start your car. While voice control isn’t exactly “automation,” it makes life much easier and is a fun feature of smart features available today.

Security

The majority of homes come with a pre-installed notification system, which is fondly called the doorbell. Unfortunately, this bell isn’t able to provide much information besides an alert that lets you know someone is there. However, now there are video capable doorbells, and other features that let you know that someone has arrived before they even ring the bell. If you don’t want to see someone, you can run and hide long before they have a chance to hear or see you ducking behind the curtain inside.

There is no question that it is a time of technology and the use of smart devices is only going to increase as new devices are created. For those who have yet to embrace the world of the smart home, getting to know some of the features offered may convince them to take the plunge.
